Feeding Neighbors' mission is to end hunger and food insecurity by growing and distributing free, fresh, organic produce to individuals, households, and entire communities. We are improving the quality of life for communities by providing nutritional foods, reducing family budgets, beautifying neighborhoods and enhancing self-reliance.
The first free food garden managed by our organization, Nanna Anna's Garden in Atlanta, begins planting in spring 2015. Food from the garden will be distributed throughout the community as it is harvested, with a portion of the yields to be donated to local food banks and shelters.
Feeding Neighbors was founded November 23, 2014 by Harry D. Clements, Jr. Harry has had a passion for growing things since he was a child in the suburbs of Miami, Florida. Coming from a family of gardeners, he became infatuated with watching plants sprout out from the soil days after his grandmother planted seeds, eventually getting the chance to sow his own seeds in her garden. Harry's great-grandmother was very influential in his interest in fruit, flowers and foliage. She was meticulous in her care for her plants and they rewarded her with a show of beautiful blooms and tasty fruit. This is where Harry picked up his attention to detail and nurturing in the garden (his "green thumb".)
As an adult, Harry moved to an urban area of Miami where he lived in an apartment building. The building had a small common area in the back where he was given permission to plant a vegetable garden. This is where Harry realized a need in the community for fresh produce. People in the community, including Harry, had to travel 2 miles or more on foot to the nearest grocery store, and relied on public transit to get to the next closest grocer. So, out of necessity, Harry grew enough greens, peppers and tomatoes for himself and to share with his friends and neighbors.
Mr. Clements has carried this giving spirit with him to Atlanta, Georgia. He currently has a home garden that has produced various types of greens, peppers, tomatoes, onions, strawberries, corn, beans, herbs, flowers and foliage -- all shared with family, friends and neighbors. Feeding Neighbors is his response to his current community's need for food assistance.
